Papelbon Blows It....Again....
For the second straight game Jonathan Papelbon blew a save for the Red Sox against the Rockies. It was a fitting chapter in what had been a back and forth game from the beginning.
...but Pedroia Bails Him Out
Thankfully, Papelbon's failure was overshadowed by Dustin Pedroia's third home run of the game in extra innings, giving Boston a 13-11 victory in 10 innings. Daisuke Matsuzaka allowed the first five batters to reach in the first inning, giving up two runs. However, he recovered and left after five innings of work with a 6-2 lead.
The Sox bullpen proceeded to blow the lead and allow the Rockies a two run lead heading into the seventh inning. Boston brought it right back thanks to a two run double from Jason Varitek and Pedroia's second blast of the game.
The win kept the Red Sox from being swept in Colorado, but it was their first series loss since early May. Now, they head to San Francisco for a three game series with the Giants, including a matchup with reigning Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum.
Celtics Draft Bradley, Harangody
The Boston Celtics drafted Texas freshman Avery Bradley with the 19th overall pick and Notre Dame senior Luke Harangody #52 overall in the NBA Draft last night. Bradley was the top ranked high school player in 2009, ahead of #1 overall pick John Wall. However, he did not put up stellar numbers at Texas.
Bradley has loads of athleticism and can run a team, making him a nice fit behind Rajon Rondo. He does need to undergo an ankle scope and will miss playing summer league ball with the C's. Harangody put up some gaudy numbers at Notre Dame, but his body type doesn't project well for the league. Although, Boston's had success with another undersized power forward in Glen Davis.
Bruins Busy Around Draft Day
The Boston Bruins will take either Taylor Hall or Tyler Seguin with whomever the Oilers don't take with the first overall piick. However, that doesn't mean the B's are focusing all their attention on the young guys. Just this week, the Bruins traded Dennis Wideman and the 15th overall pick away to the Panthers for perennial 20-goal scorer Nathan Horton.
They also added back some key parts of last year's surprise team by re-signing Johnny Boychuk to a two-year extension, and agreeing to a one-year deal with veteran leader Mark Recchi. They're also staying aggressive on the trade market, shopping Marc Savard and Tim Thomas.
