After watching the Rays lose earlier today, and knowing the Yankees were battling the always tough Cliff Lee tonight, the Red Sox did not want to pass up a rare opportunity. They cashed that chance in with style, crushing four home runs off Blue Jays starter Shawn Marcum in a 10-1 win. In the process, Boston gained a game on the Rays and Yankees in the race for both the AL East and Wild Card.
Bill Hall knocked out a pair of homers, Adrian Beltre added a three-run shot, and J.D Drew's solo bomb started the run that ended Marcum's day. The Toronto righty was tagged for eight runs and seven hits over four innings. Sox starter Clay Buchholz was just the opposite. The youngster picked up his team best 13th win of the season. Buchholz pitched eight innings giving up five hits and an unearned run.
The Boston offense set the tempo early against Marcum. Their patience led to three walks and a hit-by-pitch in the first inning for a 1-0 lead without the benefit of a single hit. The big bats came out later, eventually scattering Marcum with a run of six straight hits, including home runs by Drew (off Marcum) and Beltre (off Bryan Tallet).
The Sox look for the sweep of the Jays tomorrow afternoon in Toronto. John Lackey tries to atone for his tough start against the Yankees. Brad Mills will make his third start of the season for the Blue Jays.
